FENCES

August Wilson used Troy's experience in the Negro Leagues to show the irony of the American Dream, a dream that was elusive to African Americans. Troy believes that if you were a back man in America, "you born with two strikes on you before you come to the plate." (Fences, 69). Even though in 1957, baseball was "integrated", there was still a lot of racism and segregation. Troy's bitter feelings about his baseball career echo the feelings of African Americans who were denied the chance to play on so-called "integrated" teams. Wilson uses Troy to show that the "American Dream" remained out of reach for African Americans.
